Getting outdoors is what summertime is all about and traveling with older kids, we try to take advantage of local parks and beaches offering free summer concerts. There’s almost always a craft fair or art show going on somewhere in town!
My family and I really enjoy getting a jump start on holiday shopping at these types of events, too.
Not only do we get the chance to show our support for local vendors – seriously these days, small business owners could really use the help – but we almost always come away with great do-it-yourself craft ideas for home too.
I know, attending craft fairs may not be on the top of your “honey do” list this summer and maneuvering through a hot, sweaty gym or buggy church grounds is definitely NOT for the faint of heart, am I right?
Thankfully, there are plenty of online event resources to help you plan some artsy, crafty stuff to do on your summer vacations, which are state or region specific: personally, I like to peruse the Art and Craft Show Yellow Pages and directories, like Festival.com.
On very hot days (like, August) when it’s just so sticky outside and the kids insist that any activity we suggest is just too hot (or, boring) we’ll take a quick trip to the local arts and crafts store – hey, look kids, air-conditioning that actually works and more than one bathroom – which, in my opinion, makes for a great last minute play date!
Or, grab a cool beverage and feel free to share some of your favorite ways to incorporate arts and crafts into your summertime routine, I’m easy.

I have to slide crafts in all sneaky-like. I ask Busy D. to draw a picture for his brother at camp, or I tell him I’m not very good at making paper airplanes and ask him to help.
